The Effects of Vocational Rehabilitation on a Client With Mental Disorder in Task Performance and Quality of Life: A Case Study

Abstract

|
Objective : The purpose of this case study was to investigate the effects of vocational rehabilitation a client with mental disorder in task performance and quality of life.
Methods : A 46-year-old female inpatient diagnosed with non-organic mental disorder in Gyungsang province. She participated in various vocational rehabilitation programs including cooking group 2-3 times a week. Pre and post performance skills and perceptions on quality of life were assessed with the Assessment of Motor and Process Skills(AMPS) and the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure(COPM).
Results : The results showed that the motor skills improved from 1.92 logit to 2.12 logit, and the process skills increased from 1.55 logit to 2.05 logit. Average performance and satisfaction scores of the COPM on managing snack bar, caregiver of mother, and volunteer activity increased from 6.7 to 8.3 and 5.3 to 7.7 respectively.
Conclusions : Through vocational rehabilitation programs which participant chose the task performance and satisfaction showed significant improvement. Voluntary participation and satisfaction on vocational rehabilitation are important factors for persons with mental disorders to maintain careers. Therefore, it is suggested that various occupational therapy programs be provided to meet the needs of individual clients with mental disorders in addition to prevocational programs.
